JOHN PALZER
John Palzer of Mazeppa passed away last Friday at the Wabasha Rest Home at the age of 81, following a long illness.
He was born Aug. 11, 1875, in Rochester and was a longtime resident of Mazeppa. He was employed as a day laborer.
Surviving are a sister-in-law, Mrs. Anna Palzer, and several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Bernard Marx, Bernard Hofschulte, Walter Tri, Emil Hofschulte, Richard Schmitt, and Gene Hoffman.
Interment was in the Mazeppa Catholic cemetery.
C.G. Helgerson Dies Unexpectedly
The community and entire area was saddened Tuesday by news of the sudden death of Cy Helgerson.
Death came at 2 p.m. at St. Mary’s hospital, Rochester from a heart attack where he had been hospitalized during a short illness.
Cyrus G. Helgerson, Son of Hans and Rose Helgerson, was born Aug. 4,1879, at Freeport, Iowa, but spent his youth in Millville and attended school there. He was married June 25, 1913, to Elizabeth Stecher at Zumbrota.
Cy, as he was known to everyone, came to Mazeppa about 1900. He spent about three years in Canada and one at York’s Store at Hammond.
He was employed as a clerk in Phillips’ Store on coming to Mazeppa and around 45 years ago went into partnership with the late George Squire in Squire & Helgerson general store. He became sole owner upon Mr. Squire’s death in 1942. He sold his store to Mr. and Mrs. Reider Tommeraas in August of this year after more than half a century as a popular and efficient “storekeeper” in Mazeppa.
Mr. Helgerson’s principal hobby was music, and he came to Mazeppa because of the fine band here. He played a trumpet in the municipal band for 35 years and also used to play in a dance orchestra. He was director of the municipal band for a time. He also played baseball on the local team in his younger days.
Surviving are his wife; two sisters, Mrs. Carl Polson of Red Wing and Mrs. Charles Timm of Minneapolis and a step-brother Caleb Olin of Millville.
Pallbearers will be Clyde Thomas, Reider Tommeraas, Ernest Hoefs, John Roland, William Gruhlke and Max Maas. Honorary pallbearers will be Charles Denison, Frank Almeter, George Sand, Herman Hofschulte, George Hoffman of Rochester and Dr. McGuigan of Red Wing.
As a businessman in Mazeppa for more than 50 years, Cy will be greatly missed. But he will be missed for more than that----for his unfailing cheerfulness, his love of people and especially the children coming into his store, and as good citizen taking part in most civic activities. It is impossible to measure the loss of a friend and citizen such as Cy.
