Mazeppa Consolidation Plat Approved!
The long-awaited word, “Approval” was received by Supt. Fred Eimmerman Thursday morning in regard to the hard-fought for Mazeppa consolidation plat, via a copy of a letter sent to Mrs. Verma Olin, county superintendent of schools by Commissioner of education Dean Schweickhard.
However, the state department of education amended the plat to include District 49 (South Troy) and in District 89 (White Bridge) in order, in the department’s words “to bring this proposal near to the minimum goals in valuation and pupil enrollment.”
The department added, in part; “The proposed consolidation plat is hereby amended to include Dist. No. 49 of Wabasha County and Dist. No 89 of Olmsted County. The addition of these two districts will add more than $200,000 to the assessed valuation and about 20 more pupils to the secondary school.
The concentrated fight to save the Mazeppa school began in January, after the plat had been approved, rejected because of technicality, resubmitted and rejected in December. The American Legion auxiliary, with Mrs. S.H. Prigge as chairman, then organized a citizen’s committee to work with school officials, organize a caravan of 250 to the state department of education, contact rural residents etc. The group also met with Gov. Freeman, and organized caravans to the county commissioner’s meetings in February and March.
The decision by the state department will give the area concrete terms on which to work, and it is hoped the entire community will keep on striving to complete the goal of anew, consolidated school in Mazeppa.
