On April 12th, H-3 (Healthy Soils, Healthy Waters & Healthy Communities) seminar was held at the Mazeppa Community Center from 8 am. - 4pm. Sponsorship was by Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, minnesota Department of Agriculture, Zumbro Watershed Partnership, Renewing the Countryside, S.O.M. Generators and the Mazeppa Area Historical Society. Sediment Bowls Bus Tour was a 2 hr. bus ride from Mazeppa,to Zumbro Falls, Sandy Point, Oronoco and Pine Island. Along with the bus tour there were individual booths provided by the organizations and speakers all day. One interesting factor was that the soil core that was taken from the bed of the "Old Pond" and they had to go down 17' before they found the bed of the lake. Comment was they had never seen such black dirt! Lunch was provided by the Mazeppa Historical Society which all comments were "Excellent". Attendance was less then expected but those who attended felt it was a huge success and very informative.
Once again the Mazeppa Area Historical Society and the Mazeppa Lions Club teamed up for the 3rd year to welcome Santa Clause on his annual pre-Christmas scouting trip to Mazeppa. Parking his sleigh in an unknown location, he hitched a ride on a Mazeppa fire truck and arrived at the Community Center to the awaiting youngsters gathered there. First, checking out the food line of the Historical Society’s soup, chili, and fixings, he and his elf helper proceeded to hoist the little ones to his very adequate lap to find out their list for Christmas. All were provided a bag of treats by the Lions. In the mean time many folks were lining up to enjoy the chili and chicken noodle soup from the Historical Society. Many bowls were dished up and although the quantity of both soup and chili were increased from last year both of the delicacies were gone in a short amount of time. Those who were lucky enough raved at the taste of cold weather treat. Raffle prizes were given out with Rick Tri winning the handmade quilt donated by Lori Vanetta, John Deere toy tractor won by Brenda Wiech, and $50.00 cash won by Diane Gilsdorf. A good time was had by all with visits with Santa, good food, and shared conversation. Be sure to mark next year’s calendar as “more” soup and chili will be served again.
