THE MAZEPPA JOURNAL, Editor and Publisher: Barbara and Reider Tommeraas FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, 1955 STUDENTS ESCAPE SERIOUS INJURY IN SUNDAY ACCIDENT Six local boys escaped serious injury last Sunday afternoon when the automobile in which they were riding left the road near Kenneth Tupper’s farm south of town, and was demolished. Passengers were Gary Oelkers, driver, Charles Robinson, Leonard Liffrig, Jim and Larry Sand and Bill Webster. Robinson received a cracked collarbone and was taken to Zumbrota for medical treatment. The others were shaken up and had a few bruises and minor cuts.
Rural School Plat Denied Approval The state department of education has rejected the rural plat composed of 21 districts in this area, including Mazeppa. Notice of the rejection was announced last week. Reasons for the rejection included overlapping of districts, some in process of dissolution, and District 80 (Zumbro Falls) also included in the plat, has already consolidated with Lake City. Absence of existing facilities for secondary education and the high cost of erecting the necessary unit to house pupils of proposed area was another factor cited in the rejection.
NO WORD ON LOCAL PLAT Mazeppa’s plat for consolidation is still with the state department and no word on its status has been received. Information is expected in the near future.
Obituaries MRS. BERTHA SEIBERT Funeral services for Bertha Seibert, 88 years old, who died in the Zumbrota Community hospital early Sunday morning, were conducted Tuesday at 2p.m. in St. John’s Lutheran church here(Mazeppa) with burial in the Poplar Grove cemetery, Pine Island township. Rev. Theo. Haar officiated. Bertha Sommerfieldt was born in Deutschfeldt, Germany, March 16, 1867 and immigrated to the United States when she was about 22 years old. After living in Wisconsin for four years, she came to Minnesota where she married Henry Seibert on Sept. 4, 1894. The couple lived on a farm south of Mazeppa before moving to town in 1920. Mr. Seibert died in 1936. Surviving are her son, Edwin of Stillwater; two stepchildren, Robert of Mazeppa and Mrs. Albert Ihrke of Zumbrota: two brothers, William of Manawa, Wisconsin and Otto in Germany; three sisters, Marie Mengert of Manawa, Wisconsin, Anna Fischer of Ellsworth, Wis., and Alvina in Germany. Pallbearers were Albert Schreader, Otto King, Edward Youngs, Henry Prigge, Carl Sommerfeldt and Henry Thiele. JC Pfeiffer Awarded trip to Itasca Park
Outstanding work in the 4-H conservation program, has won for JC Pfeiffer, Mazeppa, a member of the Busy 54’s club, a trip to the State 4-H Conservation camp in Itasca Park, Sept. 10-17.
METHODIST HAM DINNER The ladies of the Methodist church will serve their annual ham dinner Thursday, Sept. 15, in the fellowship rooms; beginning at 5 p.m. Prices are $1.25 for adults and 60c for children under 12.
KILLING FROST IN AREA EARLIEST IN 38 YEARS The earliest killing frost in 38 years hit Mazeppa and area, Sunday morning. However, late-maturing crops were about two weeks ahead of schedule, so the frost did little damage except to gardens. A heavy rain Tuesday night helped a great deal, as plowing has been held up because of the hard ground. Once again, how fortunate southeastern Minnesota was---having neither drought nor flood and on the whole enjoying excellent yield. Local News Thomas Manthei, son of Mr. and Mrs. D. Manthei, returned home from St. Mary’s hospital, Rochester on Friday. He had been a patient there since last week, Tuesday with polio (non-paralytic). The Commercial Club met on Monday evening with supper at Arendt’s Café and a regular meeting following at the Community rooms.
